Ranking List Rules

This page contains the reasoning behind the KirriCorp League's errata on the card Judgement of the Flame's Spear and the Water's Blade, shown below in its original form.

Name: Judgement of the Flame's Spear and the Water's Blade
Type: Spell
Civilization: Water/Fire
Cost: 6
Rules Text: Destroy all creatures with 3000 power or less. Afterwards, you may draw a card for each creature destroyed.
Mana Number: 1
Set: Eternal Phoenix

As with all KC errata, justification of this argument relies on the semi-rigid card costing system given within Duel Masters. The relevant aspects of the cost system are shown, with examples, in the following data.

Ability: Destruction of all creatures below X000 power
Cost: X+3, possibly X+2.
Reference: Magmarex, Burst Shot(+1 for Shield Trigger), Blizzard of Spears

Ability: Drawing X cards
Cost: X+1, possibly increases as the number of cards drawn increases
Reference: Energy Stream, Brain Serum (+1 for Shield Trigger)

This card raised many complex issues. It was relatively certain that it would require an errata, as it is limited to one in Japanese play, and has no English play counterpart. Limiting it to one seemed fair enough, however, KC attempts to avoid this particular method of handling cards due to the fact that it is possible, though difficult, to simply cheat the ratios and many opponents never discover this. (without discard or the ability to view the hand/shields, it is possible that someone can have more than one in the deck to raise the chance of drawing it and the second/third never be discovered). Also, losses due to it being played even 'luckily' would cause no less strife.

Generally multi-colored spells combine the abilities of two spells of two spells from the civilization into one card, with cost adjustments for timing of casting, and overall power of effect. This gave the task of deciphering what two spells would be combined to make this card, even if the two combined spells were fictional.

The card 'Judgement of the Flame's Spear' was imagined, which would have the effect 'Destroy all creatures of 3000 power or less' and cost 5.

The card 'Judgement of the Water's Blade' was imagined, which would have the effect 'Draw a card for each creature in the battle zone with 3000 power or less' which was not given a cost estimation at first. It was then decided to slowly step through the possible costs of this card.

At a cost of 1, this card would be considered unfair. So on for a cost of 2, 3, and 4. At a cost of 5, its conditional nature might manage to have it labeled as fair. At this point, analysis ended. Given that the card was already restricted to one for Japanese play, and the fact that it would cost at least 8 to even approach fairness, further analysis was restricted to the realm of passing thought.

Clearly the card is purely advantageous to any caster without any 3000 power creatures on the field, but Judgement of the Flame's Spear as a stand alone card would also fit this description. The card is also not completely disadvantageous to any player who has such creatures on the field even if their opponent does not. Judgement of the Water's Blade as a stand-alone card would be advantageous in this case, but the difference between the two relies on the timing of the spell and the opposing creatures.

There were some slight considerations of errata, such as combining Energy Stream and Tornado Flame (removing the shield trigger), but as the cost of any spell involves the card itself (a cost that cannot be quantified in terms of a direct equivalence to mana) most of these possible errata were dismissed. KirriCorp errata aim to preserve as much of the original card as possible. The single possible errata that seemed to approximate to this involved having each player draw cards according to the number of their own creatures destroyed. While this would represent a theoretical balancing of the card, the current research team is wary of making this particular change without heavy testing and analysis (see: Mongrel Man, Gigaclaws+Shadow Moon, Deklowaz, The Terminator).

Result:

Name: Judgement of the Flame's Spear and the Water's Blade
Type: Spell
Civilization: Water/Fire
Cost: 6
Rules Text: When you cast this spell, you lose instantly.
Mana Number: 1
Set: Eternal Phoenix

In the event that the KC variant gains sufficient popularity for new players to pay attention to specific errata even if they represent a large change, then one of the researched effects may be added to the Judgement to make it playable. Feel free to test and suggest anything appropriate to Fire/Water. The card must at all times retain both a destructive effect and a card drawing effect. Please also bear in mind that any penalty that is far too easy to avoid in deckbuilding is not sufficient balancing for a spell. (e.g. there are no spells that say 'destroy all non-Darkness creatures')
